Megan Hoyle talked to us about ways to encourage each other and those we came in contact with. It was a great reminder about how our words can build others up.

The work assignments included: three girls stayed at Casa and helped with the youngest children so the caretakers could clean up the dorms and wash the children’s clothes. Another large group went to the kindergarten and completed painting the inside of the four classrooms. This is a HUGE job and is making a tremendous difference. All we have left to do is the outside of the building on the street side. We will tackle that on Friday.

Another large group went to the community site and completed pouring the pier for the duplexes. This was a really hard, big job and this group did a wonderful job. Don Farrer and Jack Reeher have done an amazing job with this and it has come together quickly. The group worked straight in the sun from 9 a.m. until about 2:30 p.m. and finished it all up. It will be great for them to hear from the medical mission group in August how this project progresses in the coming weeks.

In addition to these jobs we had a couple helping in the Casa kitchen prepare the lunch and a half dozen guys running electrical lines in the new office area. David Nelson and Jess Dowdy have used their expertise to get this project advanced. Everyone was busy and felt good at the end of the day about how it had all gone.

In the afternoon we delivered 98 bags of food to some of the poorer neighborhoods in the area. This was an eye-opening experience for everyone – houses with doors you can see through the gaps, cows grazing in the streets, children with little clothing.. The gifts were received enthusiastically at some places and skeptically at others. This was a great chance for us to practice our Spanish and explain that we were there from Casa and representing Jesus Christ.

When our Bibles and food bags were gone we met at the huge cross up on the mountain overlooking the city. We knelt and prayed and sang at the cross and looked out over the city that the people at Casa want so desperately to reach for Christ. It was a very special time and a beautiful view of the area.

After returning to the Casa we met one last time with Gil Sanchez. He and his wife will leave Friday a.m. to take their granddaughters back home to Colorado. He thanked us for coming and being a light to the children and the community.

We returned to our motel and ate a great dinner at the Mennonite Restaurant. Jesse Morgan’s 16th birthday was celebrated with a cake after dinner and piñata in the gazebo after our evening devotional.

We are looking forward to our last day. Right now we are on the bus to the Casa. It will be sad to say goodbye to the beautiful children and staff but we have had a great week and feel blessed to have been here.

Here are a few messages from kids and adults written yesterday and this morning….

. This is Katee and Jill. Today we painted at the elementary school in town and the rest of us worked on laying a foundation at the construction site. We got most of the school finished and plan to finish it tomorrow.
After work we passed out food to the town’s people and went to the big cross on a mountain that over looks the city. There we prayed and had a mini devo. Tonight we are going to the Mennonite restaurant to eat. We are having fun and things are going great!

this is Mitchell. Today we poured the foundation for what will eventually be a 2 bedroom house for a homeless man. After work, lunch and playing with the children we passed out food to two of the poorest areas in Anahuac. Tonight we are eating at the Mennonite restaurant. We are all having a great time.

This is Nina! Hello from Mexico. We are working hard, eating way too much, and serving and being served with much love. We begin our final day today, Friday.

Good morning from Mexico!

Photos from Wednesday

Here are some images from Wednesday's work...

A great group went to the local kindergarten to paint the entire building. Today we got to Casa around 9 o’clock and then had a devotional and worship time. Today I was on the painting team for the kindergarten school in town. We got a lot accomplished today but there is still a ton of work to be done. Tonight we are cooking hamburgers and then going to the taco stand! I’m pretty sure everyone is exhausted but we are having a great time!

Hey, this is AJ (a.k.a…Amber and Jena) We woke up around 7 o’ clock, and ate breakfast then headed to casa and had morning devo. Then we broke up into groups and pave cement or move wood or paint a school but our favorite part of service is playing with the casa kids and showing them a good time. We just got finished with our lunch and are about to go play with all the children. After our work is done here then we are going to go eat at a taco shack. When we are finished with out dinner we’ll return to the hotel for the night devotional and head off to bed. We can’t wait till the next day at casa.

Hi, this is Janie Farrer,
We are having sooo much fun! The trip was rather long, but we made it. We are doing so much at Casa, and in the town of Anahuac. We are painting a kindergarten school, and some of the guys are digging and laying the foundation for a duplex . There is so much work that needs to be done here and so little time to do it. It is so rewarding to know the children will benefit from our work. Continue praying for us and the work here at Casa.

Hello! This is Hannah. Casa is such an amazing experience. Today we went to the school that the kindergarten children from Casa attend. It’s devastating, and in worse condition than you can ever imagine. We got a lot done though, and it’s starting to look cleaner. However, the children have a greater impact on me. They are so so happy. I can hardly understand how they are so content with their lives, but somehow God has worked in their hearts and made them happier than any orphan is expected to be. They are so sweet, and so willing to open up to us, language barrier or not. There is a little 3 year old named Santiago that I am determined to make mine one day. He’s so precious. All in all, so far this week has been greater than I expected. Please continue to pray for our safety here in Mexico, and also the impact that God will have on the children through our actions here at Casa. J Thank you!

Check the AYM hotline for more messages from our Alpine group and don't forget to leave us messages here. We love you guys and are so grateful for this opportunity!

Messages from kids....

Here are some messages from Alpine missionaries:

This is Maegan Reeher, Im having so much fun here. Yesterday when we got here we played with the little kids for a couple of hours, it was very intresting trying to understand them. I was like "What are you talking about??" This morning I woke up at seven and ate breakfast and then we came to Casa, I stared by loading wood onto a truck and taking it back and forth unloading it. Then I started painting the building a peach color. Its been real great serving for the people here. Im really happy I came. Thanks, to everybody that helped me be able to go on this trip. I miss you Mom and Emily. :D

Hi this is MaLisa Nelson, it was a long trip to Mexico, but arriving yesterday and getting to interact with the children has been a lot of fun. The best thing that has happened in my opinion so far was when we arrived at dinner, the kids got up and just smiled and hugged us with big smiles on their faces. Although I know very little Spanish the communicating through hugs and smiles is almost enough. Today I worked with a couple of other people on painting some walls, it was hot, however, we worked very hard and got a lot accomplished. I am so glad for the opportunity to serve the kids and people here in Mexico, and know this is a good experience. Thanks for all your prayers, please let them continue. [:

From Matthew Herigon:
This morning Bobby, Michael and I got a huge tarp and put it over the playground area, secured a cable around it and tied it down so the kids can play in the shade. We'll finish that project tomorrow when we have more rope. I helped unload, mix and pour the concrete to prepare for another wall in the playground area. While getting wood for forming up the concrete and Michael and I found a rat in the woodshed area and scared it off so the girls wouldn't be afraid anymore. We also helped unload and stack wood. So we got a lot done.

We had cheese/bean pizza last night on a roll with rice and watermelon for dessert. Today for lunch we had enchiladas (Mrs. Hoyle and Mrs. Farrer helped cook) and refried beans and salad. So no one is starving. Tonight we are going to Don Pepperoni's -- a local favorite pizzaria with a great icecream next door in a nearby town.

I've met a bunch of nice little kids who want me sit with them. I play with them and they are teaching me some Spanish.

From Will Morgan:
Today's spiritual theme was "Being a servant like our master" It was based on John 13:1-17 that talks about Jesus washing the disciples' feet. During our devo after lunch I shared a few of my thoughts on what this may have looked like to us had we been there and we talked about how the greatest way to show God's full extent of HIs love is to love those who are less fortunate than ourselves.

We are truly enjoying ourselves while serving those around us.

...more later!

Images from the road...

Here are a few pics from Monday.

The Hughes girls proudly show they got all their paperwork filled out to cross the border.

This is our amazing bus driver Jose helps us in countless ways. Already our team is at work painting, bagging trees (to protect the fruit from birds, ect.), pouring concrete, chopping wood, electrical and plumbing projects, etc...

Yesterday was a great day...we got off early and crossed the border with absolutely no problem. Our driver, Jose, is a terrific help and we sailed through in about 45 minutes. On the road we went straight on through to Chihuahua where we got to roam about eating and shopping for a couple of hours. Some were careful and ate at Burger King and other U.S. fastfood stops while others were more adventurous and tried out the open air taco stands. No one got sick and everybody enjoyed the experience, so no worries! We got back on the bus and pressed on toward Casa. We arrived around 5 p.m. and got to see the children briefly as they went into an afternoon devotional. Gill gave us an orientation and told us about Casa and its beginnings and the mission here. He also outlined projects we will be involved with and told us how it will impact the children and the community around Casa.

We ate dinner with the kids and our Alpine kids immediately connected with the children. Lots of hugs and smiles and pantomiming going on. Several recognized kids from years past and picked up right where they had left off before. After dinner we had a couple of hours to go outside with the children and play....soccer, football, jumprope, roller skating, playing the sand, etc.... It cooled off nicely and was a beautiful evening to be outside together.

Some of our men...David, Jess, Don and Jack worked on the Casa school bus which has been out of commission for the past month and got it running again.

We left the Casa at dark and sang as we drove back to our motel in Anahuac. It is very nice and clean and is adjacent to a restaurant where we have our breakfast each morning. Back in our rooms we did a brief devotional about being like Christ which helped us think about Who we are reflecting this week. Gill really impressed upon us the importance of how we are viewed by the children. We are here reinforcing all that they teach the children about how Christians live so it is very important that we remember that we are the face of Christ while here.

This morning we were up and eating a great breakfast by 7 a.m. and were on the road to Casa by 8:30 a.m. Once here we met up with the other church we are working with (North A Church of Christ from Midland/Odessa area), sang and prayed and Gill gave us our assignments. Everyone has gone off in every direction to work this morning around the campus and also in town at a community project that is just starting. We are very excited to represent Casa in a groundbreaking project today that will fill an empty lot with several housing units, a church building and medical clinic. It is great that we can be a part of the beginning of this project that will positively impact the local town and benefit so many. Our team of guys will be laying things out and starting the foundational work. It will be great to come back in subsequent trips to see how this project continues and is later in use. To God be the glory!

It is a beautiful day at Casa-- a nice breeze is blowing and the birds are singing-- and we are thankful to be here and to witness God working through so many people. We will try to post some photos here for you to see what we're doing as soon as we are able. Everyone is doing great and happy to be here. Please keep up your prayers for us. More later!

We love and appreciate all of you!

Mission Mexico Traveling

Our trip began early on Sunday morning, June 8th... ready for our "three hour tour" to Presidio Texas (with a bus transfer in San Antonio).

We ate at FREEBIRDS in San Marcos, and ate a little burrito.

We arrived at 1:30 a.m.

We'll keep you posted...

We're about to eat breakfast and cross the border.

Here's Sharon Novak pouring juice for our nutritious breakfast... with the lid on.
